How where they made?
These inspired energy masks were created eyes closed in clay. By placing a loose fiber Japanese paper with wheat based wallpaper paste on the clay positive, a paper shell was then lifted and then painted.
An Eyes Closed Process
Using a different starting point or inciting idea, sounds, movement technique to illicit a somatic response from the body, once an emotional yoke was vibrantly available, the artist goes to the clay with eyes closed to further explore and express the content onto its surface. It could be said that any idea can be used to draw forth content from one’s interior reality and that is just the beginning. Colours were also selected in an eyes closed manner at first. Each colour being explored before touching the mask to find its placement. Eventually the masks began to easily tell their story and the content became virtually automatic in the process of tagging meaning, emotion and sensation to them as identifiers onto the surface of the mask.
The mask was then used to explore and express both adult and child aspects. After the creative discovery and construction process, the masks serve as touch stones and for maintaining a strong link to the Somatic Imagination and one’s active awareness.
